How Age Affects the Face

How age affects the face

As a Beverly Hills facelift and facial rejuvenation specialist, I have had the honor and privilege of helping people from over 100 different countries who are looking to improve the appearance of their aging face. I have had a wealth of first hand experience with regards to the effects of age on the face. A comprehensive description of every.htmlect of facial aging would require hundreds of pages of information, but I will outline the key factors that one should know when considering facial rejuvenation. The information below is to serve as a general guideline and in no way should be considered absolute rules.

Early 30’s

People in their early 30’s and sometimes even younger, will first start to notice a loss of facial volume and this may first be seen as changes in their skin, including forehead wrinkles and nasolabial folds (laugh lines). As we age, we lose facial fat and this can be thought of as a beach ball losing its air. The face will start a slow and steady descent in all locations. For most people in their 30’s, a combination of Botox and fillers can restore lost volume and reduce the severity of wrinkles in a very effective and satisfactory way.

Late 30’s to mid 40’s

People in this age range will notice the loss of volume in a more significant way and this may manifest as tired, heavy upper and/or lower eyelids, as well as less definition to the cheeks, neck, and jawline. At this point, many people start pulling their face back with their hands as they look in the mirror every day to simulate the degree of tightness they wish to regain. Botox and fillers may still be the perfect treatment for people in this age range, but for those people who rely on their appearance for their livelihood or those who simply wish to look younger, surgery may be the best option. Common procedures in this age range include facial fat grafting, upper and lower blepharoplasty (eyelid rejuvenation), endoscopic browlift and mini facelift.

Mid 40’s and up

At this point, the effects of loss of volume will be compounded by the loss of skin elasticity. Skin elasticity is essentially the skin’s ability to maintain its taut adherence to the facial structure. At this point, people will notice all of the aging changes noted above, to a more significant degree, as well as jowl formation and looseness to the neck and jawline. Once these changes have occurred, a facelift with or without a full facial rejuvenation surgery, is the most appropriate and most effective treatment for those people who are serious about and committed to restoring a more youthful and attractive appearance. Botox and fillers can certainly improve one’s appearance when they have reached this stage, but the results are very limited and temporary, and require frequent repeat treatments to maintain the results. Facial rejuvenation surgery can restore one’s appearance and self confidence in a way that is unachievable with any other modality, and the results will be long lasting.
